Bankhead Highway

The Bankhead Highway as Wallace Bennett saw it!
“The old Bankhead Highway deserves its place in our local history because the highway played a significant and vital role in the development of Baird and other Callahan County communities on its route. It carried many of the autos fleeing the dust storms and depression of the 1930's. You could tell at a glance where they were heading and why!

From the vantage point of my father's Blue Arrow Filling Station, which sat smack-dab on the side of the Bankhead Highway (across the street from the Callahan County Courthouse. I watched the parade of cars going to California to seek their fortune or disappointment, whichever came first. Most of the old cars were Model T Ford Touring cars with the family goods tied on the sides and the top.”
